UPDATE: Watching Football, Other Writing

Here’s a bunch of articles I’ve written in the last little while.

I’ve been a bit behind on my cross-posting as of late. Here are some of my more recent articles on sports and so on.

On Panic

I wrote this in the early days of the COVID pandemic. It serves as a reminder of two very important things: endless news is really bad for your mental health when all the news is designed to make you afraid, and that someday you are going to die.

Black Swans

Still in my COVID sense-making phase. I’m not very proud of this column. It’s overly dense, and probably a misread of Nassim Taleb’s book, because the COVID pandemic is less a true “black swan” and more a completely predictable event that appears black-swan-like – a “black goose,” if you will.

College Football and COVID

This was my advice for college football as the summer COVID surge occurred. I still hold to it. It’s simple: (1) let players sit out without penalty, (2) make all university classes Zoom-optional, and (3) reschedule games to minimize travel. The conferences and universities went . . . a different route.

COVID and the Conferences

This post detailed every Power 5 conference’s approach to the pandemic in mid-to-late July.

COVID Scheduling, PAC-12 Players Strike, The XFL

Here’s a news roundup covering my impressions of the early COVID conference-only scheduling attempts by the Power 5, my stance against unions in college football, and my excitement over The Rock’s purchase of the XFL.

#WeWantToPlay

Released right after an insane weekend where the Big Ten and Pac-12’s resolve to play football collapsed in on itself like a dying star. I carefully explained how dumb this was, spoke about the real reasons behind the shift (hint: not COVID), and outlined where things could go from here.

The Season(s) To Come

In which I go full nuclear on the feckless Big Ten and Pac-12 for canceling/postponing football, because they deserved it. I also praised the Big 12 for having “something resembling a spine.”

I’ll be cross-posting the ACC and Big 12 previews I did on their own. This site will be more active for a while, I think, so enjoy!
